PAPER: ‘Why Unknown Motive in Las Vegas Massacre is So Unsettling’

- Oktober 17, 2017

There are many questions concerning Las Vegas shooter – 64-year-old Stephen Paddock from Mesquite, Nevada – that remain unanswered.

But based on what we don’t know, we may have some indication of what we do know.

We know that a gunman opened fire on the crowd of concertgoers at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival next to the Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas. At least 59 people are reported dead with 527 injured.

We know that the event was sold out with many of the biggest names in country music present when shots were fired. Videos of the event show the concert in progress and then suddenly multiple gun shots from an automatic weapon being fired.

We know that the shooter was identified as Paddock and that he died by an apparent suicide shot before police could get to him.

The curios case of the Mandalay Bay security guard was people on edge, as well.

Jesus Campos has gone missing once again. The Union representative who recently issued a statement to the press on Campos’ behalf says he doesn’t know where he is now. After Campos checked into a clinic, he appears to have vanished once again.

FOX News reports:

The Mandalay Bay security guard who disappeared last week moments before he was scheduled to break his silence in television interviews has not been seen since he went to a walk-in health clinic, his union president said.

[…]A spokesperson at the UMC Quick Care, which has eight locations throughout the Las Vegas area, told Fox News on Monday that they had “heard nothing” about Campos visiting them.

Multiple requests from Fox News for SPFPA to comment on the matter were not returned Monday.

Fox News contributor Randy Sutton believes Campos was told to “shut the hell up,” about his role in the Las Vegas attack.

Psychologists fear the Las Vegas massacre will have a long lasting impact on the psyche of the American people. Not knowing the motive of the shooter is “bothering us on an almost existential level,” says psychologist Yuval Neria.

Record Online reports:

“The lack of explanation here is bothering us on an almost existential level,” said psychologist Yuval Neria, an expert on post-traumatic stress disorder at Columbia University in New York. It’s an anguish Neria says he has heard in his lab and in his clinical practice from people who have followed the unfolding horrors from afar and from those with direct ties to the shooting.

“It is an unconscious and profound human trait to seek a motive for catastrophic violence. It is a means of self-defense,” said Jeff Victoroff, a professor of psychiatry and neurology at the University of Southern California and an expert in trauma, terrorism and human aggression. “People need to make contingency plans, to protect themselves, by assigning a motive, recognizing people with that motive, and staying away from them.”

[…]

“It’s unbearable,” Victoroff said. Without actionable answers that make Paddock a rare and distant monster, he said, “you are paralyzed.”

Amid the anger and confusion brought upon by an ever-changing timeline by the Las Vegas Police Department and FBI, MGM Resorts International has hired an elite crisis management firm. The move comes on the same day Sheriff Joe Lombardo claims there is little difference between police and Casino timelines. MGM Resorts International has said otherwise — twice.

Las Vegas Review-Journal reports:

At a news conference, a sometimes combative and at times emotional Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo said MGM Resorts International had the correct timeline of events surrounding the Oct. 1 Strip attack.

“I’m not in conflict with their statement,” Lombardo confirmed, following a weeklong dispute over the timeline of events that occurred the night of the shooting.

[…]

Twice this week, MGM Resorts disputed Lombardo’s revised timeline. The company, which owns Mandalay Bay, released the following details Thursday:

All of these unknowns make the deadliest shooting in modern U.S. history that much more freighting.
