Vice President Mike Pence made an unannounced visit to Afghanistan to visit US troops who are spending the holidays away from their families.
This is Pence’s first visit to a war zone since taking office.
According to ABC News, Pence landed at Bagram Air Force base around 7 PM local time and shook hands with Afghanistan Ambassador John Bass and General John W Nicholson, according to a press pool report.
Pence then traveled to the presidential palace where President Ashraf Ghani and Afghanistan’s CEO Dr. Abdullah Abdullah met him on a red carpet, according to the pool note.
Vice President Mike Pence proudly said, “Merry Christmas” to the US troops and also talked about baby Jesus in the manger and the promise of eternal life.
The Vice President thanked the troops for their service and offered words of encouragement.
