Everyone is now aware that Robert Mueller has not been able to build a case on the key item in his mandate, i.e. collusion with Russia, and has now focused his attention on getting scalps for process crimes and obstruction of justice charges.
The Democrats desperately need Mueller to draw the “investigation” out to as close to November as possible so it can boost their chances of taking over Congress. Given that Mueller deliberately chose only committed Democrats to staff his “investigative” team, and the clear intent to draw out his operation – note that he just requested a 90 day delay in Micheal Flynn’s sentencing – it’s clear that the Democrats are going to get the “October Surprise” they need.
Note; the aim would be to get the headlines for maximum political impact, not to eventually secure convictions. This is the same play that was made by Laurence Walsh in 1992 – putting the final nail in George H. W. Bush’s reelection hopes.
It is one of Washington’s worst kept secrets – everyone, including NeverTrumpers, knows the Russia Collusion story is fiction, it really is all about giving Trump and the GOP a bloody nose in November 2018.
That is, so long as Mueller is allowed to continue drawing out this “investigation.”
Which is why I think it’s time for Trump to bite the bullet and proceed to end the charade.
It is simple; Trump should instruct Rod Rosenstein to give Mueller up until May 17, 2018 to either file indictments in line with his mandate or, in the alternative, close up shop and submit his report to the Department of Justice no later than June 17, 2018. In addition, Mueller should be given a budget limit – a generous one – e.g. $10 million, to enable him accomplish whatever it is he wishes to accomplish within the set time period.
This means – and it should be made clear and repeated over and over again from the day it is announced, that Mueller would have had one year exactly and up to $20 million to carry out his “investigation.”
If Mueller says he would quit rather than accept a timeline and budget, the President should happily accept his resignation and appoint another Special Counsel to continue where Mueller left off.
The Democrats will lose their minds.
Which is no different from where they are now.
But they would have a heck of a time trying to convince the American people that being given a full year, three months notice, and $20 million is the same thing as being “stopped” from conducting an investigation.
