Independent Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont religiously slams the rich, warning that people who enjoy wealth are the detriment of the working class— rhetoric that was ramped up when he was a candidate in the 2016 presidential campaign.
Just one problem: Sanders’ own bank account is bursting at the seams.
The self-proclaimed Socialist, who is a proponent of hiking taxes to an eye-popping 90 percent for wealthy Americans, shows time and time again that he’s far from slumming it. He is actually more aligned with the people his socialist followers are fighting against. For the second year in a row, his income topped seven figures; he’s firmly in the top 1 percent nationally.
After devoting his political career to railing against “millionaires and billionaires” who don’t pay enough in taxes, Sanders made nearly $1.06 million in 2017, according to his U.S. Senate financial disclosure.
Sanders earned $174,000 for his service in the Senate, but most of his income — $885,767 — came from advances and royalties, according financial disclosure report filed in May.
Sanders was notoriously the least wealthy member of Congress, until the 2016 presidential bid catapulted his national prominence. The Democratic Socialist made more than $1 million for the first time in 2016, the vast majority of earning came from payments for his book “Our Revolution.”

When asked whether Sanders’ wealth undermines his advocacy for wealth distribution, the Senator’s senior political adviser, Jeff Weaver, argued the idea that Sanders is a hypocrite as “ridiculous.”
“That was a pretty funny question, Anne,” Weaver said in an interview with VTDigger. “Bernie Sanders continues to fight for working class people across this country so I think it’s a pretty ridiculous question.”
Sanders owns impressive real estate – from a row house on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., to a home in Burlington, Vermont and a retreat in the Lake Champlain islands, Vermont.
His criticism of affluent Americans has prompted swift backlash, with dozens of Twitter users pointing out that Sanders has three houses.
