Eric Holder, who served as President Obama’s Attorney General, tweeted last night regarding the Trump administration’s immigration policies and used a quote by the 32nd president of the United States, Franklin Delano Roosevelt — but he apparently forgot several events of Roosevelt’s presidency.

I was no fan of Donald Trump’s administration’s “zero tolerance” policy, and the United States government should have a system in place that does not forcibly separate parents and children seeking asylum, but Roosevelt is perhaps the most inappropriate president to favorably quote in this circumstance.
Roosevelt was a Democrat president who signed Executive Order 9066 in 1942, which forced more than 110,000 people of Japanese descent into internment camps. Two-thirds of the internees were native-born citizens of the United States. The United States Census Bureau aided in the forced relocation by providing information on Japanese-Americans.
Furthermore, Roosevelt’s administration denied entry to Jewish refugees, including the family of Anne Frank, who were attempting to flee the persecution and genocide occurring in Nazi Germany and Nazi-occupied countries.
The next time Holder wants to criticize the Trump administration regarding immigration — and there are certainly legitimate reasons to do so, though some horrifying problems predate the Trump administration — he clearly needs to think more carefully about how he wants to make his point.
