Lawyers for the DNC reported on Friday that London-based Professor Joseph Mifsud, who famously told former Trump campaign advisor George Papadopoulos that the Russians had political “dirt” on Hillary Clinton, is missing and may be dead.
Mifsud is one of many defendants, along with Russia, members of the Trump campaign and Wikileaks, that the DNC is suing for interference in the 2016 election. The DNC has been unable to locate Mifsud to serve their complaint.
DNC attorneys filed a “status report” in Manhattan federal court stating that Mifsud was
missing and may be deceased. Plaintiff continues to monitor news sources for any indicia of Mifsud’s whereabouts and will attempt service on Mifsud if and when he is found alive.
DNC spokeswoman Adrienne Watson sent a statement to The Hill on Friday which said:
The DNC’s counsel has attempted to serve Mifsud for months and has been unable to locate or contact him. In addition, public reports have said he has disappeared and hasn’t been seen for months.
Mifsud “met” Papadopoulos in March 2016 while traveling in Italy. In late April, they met again in London. Mifsud had just returned from a trip to Russia. It was during this meeting that Papadopoulos was told the Russians had dirt on Hillary Clinton in the form of “thousands of emails.”
In May, Papadopoulos shared this information with Australian Diplomat Alexander Downer over drinks at a London bar, and two months later, the FBI was notified of this incident.
Eventually, Papadopoulos was questioned by the FBI and made two false statements regarding his meetings with Mifsud.
- He told the FBI that “I wasn’t even on the Trump team” when Mifsud told him about the “dirt.” But he had joined the campaign in March and heard about the “dirt” in April.
- Papadopoulos also told the FBI that Mifsud was “a nothing,” and that he thought Mifsud was “just a guy talk[ing] up connections or something,” while in fact, Papadopoulos thought Mifsud had high-level Russian connections.
These two lies would eventually form the basis of the criminal charges Mueller filed against Papadopoulos and for which he pleaded guilty and is currently serving a 14 day sentence.
Hmmm. I wonder what happened to Mifsud.
