Report: Roughly 150 Migrants Break From Caravan, Now Within 500 Feet of US Border

- November 23, 2018

Approximately 150 migrants have separated from the larger caravan and are now within 500 feet of the border, according to a report on Thursday.

The migrants are planning to attempt to enter the US at the border in Baja, California.

The group is reportedly carrying flags that say “La paz y Dios,” or “Peace and God are With Us,” according to a report from the San Diego Union Tribune.

Carlos Lopez, a Honduran man who is leading the smaller group, told the Tribune that he is not willing to accept the offer from Mexico to stay there — because he claims that the conditions are horrible and they believe the US will be better.

“The whole world is watching what is happening here,” Lopez said.

Currently, there are believed to be 6,219 Central American migrants in the larger caravan — but the federal government believes that it could grow to 10,000 in as soon as a few weeks.

President Donald Trump has threatened to close the border entirely if Mexico doesn’t get control of the situation, after a judge ruled on Monday that he cannot ban asylum for those who enter the country illegally. Additionally, the president has stated that the thousands of active-duty troops deployed to the border are permitted to use lethal force “if they have to.”

The mayor of Tijuana is not happy with the Mexican federal government for not handling the caravan situation better. He has vowed not to bankrupt his city to accommodate them.

“I will not compromise public services,” Tijuana Mayor Juan Manuel Gastelum told reporters during a press conference on Thursday. “I will not spend Tijuanans’ money, I will not bring Tijuana into debt now, in the same way we haven’t done so these past two years.”
