Democrat Abigail Spanberger defeats #VA07 GOP Congressman Dave Brat in very close race. Brat was first elected to House in 2014 after defeating House Majority Leader Eric Cantor to represent the Richmond-area district.

Spanberger is a former CIA undercover operative. This is her first time running for office.
Brat, a former economics professor, has represented the district since 2014, when he unexpectedly beat then-House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in the Republican primary and then went on to win the general.

Spanberger is the first Democrat to be elected in the district since 1971.
