The Trump Administration downgraded the status of the European Union in the US and did not formally announce it.
This is the maximum insult in terms of diplomatic procedure and protocol.
The EU delegation was just informed about the change and they are absolutely livid.
The relationship between Brussels and Washington has gotten far worse.
The protests from Brussels have commenced but to no avail.
This amounts to a total demotion for the EU ambassador to the US — David O’Sullivan.
Some commentators say this has been a year in the making with Trump castigating the EU and taking a shot across their bow.
He imposed tariffs on European steel and aluminum and threatens to do the same on their automobile exports.
This would cost them dearly; especially the Germans.
Earlier, the EU slammed Trump’s favorite (Ted Malloch) to be his ambassador to the Union and some even tried to make him persona non grata.
That translates as “not welcomed”.
It was an insult to Trump and his worldview.
Trump has been very vocal in his criticism of supra-nationalism, which runs counter to his notions of national sovereignty.
Blatant EU anti-Americanism and protectionism has also caught his attention, if not his ire.
Secretary of State Pompeo questioned the value of EU multilateralism in a very pointed speech in Brussels in December that got lots of attention in the European press.
It was not received well.
The new “downgrade” to IO status –meaning international organization status, is a huge slap in the face at the globalist entity that has ambitions to rival the US.
The EU however, truthfully, is NOT a government.
Nor is a nation state.
It is a member organization.
This all came ringing home at the Bush ’41 funeral when the EU was called out last, after all other REAL countries in attendance.
The EU is angry to put it lightly.
In Trump world however, they are having the last laugh!
