During an active school shooter drill in Meadowlawn Elementary School, two teachers were reportedly told to crouch down and then were shot execution style with projectiles, causing minor injuries.
According to the Indianapolis Star, the drill went down in January where law enforcement asked teachers to kneel against a classroom wall, where they were sprayed with plastic pellets without warning:
“They told us, ‘This is what happens if you just cower and do nothing,’” said one of the two teachers, both of whom asked IndyStar not to be identified out of concern for their jobs. “They shot all of us across our backs. I was hit four times.
“It hurt so bad.”
Getting hit with the plastic pellets reportedly left welts and bruises, and even drew blood according to the Star:
One teacher said the officers told the Meadowlawn staff that police had to go through this same training.
“But we are not police officers,” she said.
The twoteachers who spoke with IndyStar said they wanted to do the training. Even after getting shot with plastic pellets that left welts and bruises and drew blood, they finished the rest of the training.
Despite the injuries, the teachers did say the find it important that the drills continue, however, law enforcement should probably lighten up on the airsoft rifles being used against teachers.
“We didn’t want to quit the training because it seemed important,” said one teacher. “It really was more than it needed to be.”
The training has resulted in more than just complaints. According to Ohio school safety expert Ken Trump, a school in Iowa had an insurance company reportedly pay out more than $250,000 in claims due to injuries over the training.
