Flashback: Suspected Ricin Letters Mailed to President Trump, Other Senior Govt Officials Three Weeks Ago

- Oktober 25, 2018

It was just three weeks ago that threatening letters suspected of containing the deadly poison ricin targeting President Trump and several high ranking administration appointees, including Secretary of Defense Mattis, FBI Director Wray and CIA Director Haspel were intercepted by authorities.

New York Times, October 2:

“Federal authorities said on Tuesday that they had intercepted multiple packages suspected of containing ricin, a lethal substance, addressed to President Trump and at least two top Pentagon officials.”

Reuters, October 18:

“A grand jury returned a seven-count indictment on Thursday against a 39-year-old Navy veteran on charges of mailing letters to President Donald Trump and other officials that contained castor beans, from which the deadly poison ricin is derived.

“William Clyde Allen III, of Logan, Utah, was arrested earlier this month and has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

“…The powder inside was later determined to contain castor bean material. Ricin naturally exists in castor bean seeds.

“In addition to mailing a letter to Trump, Allen was indicted on five counts alleging he mailed threatening letters to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral John Richardson, FBI Director Christopher Wray, CIA Director Gina Haspel and Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson.”

This incident has not been mentioned at all in the context of reporting on Wednesday’s wave of suspected mail bombs sent to prominent Democrats and supporters. It went down the memory hole and did not receive round the clock handwringing reporting on the violent state of politics. But, that was Republican and Republican appointed government officials being targeted, not Democrats.
