It was a joke that fell so flat, the impact could be heard across America.
As Sarah Quinlan wrote earlier, SNL star Pete Davidson was doing what SNL stars do, and was in the midst of insulting a Republican candidate by claiming that some “really gross people” were running for office. One of those people Davidson listed was Dan Crenshaw, a Republican candidate in Texas.
Crenshaw is a former Navy Seal who lost an eye while in Afghanistan after being hit by an IED. He now wears an eyepatch over his eye.
“You may be surprised to hear he’s a Congressional candidate from Texas and not a hitman in a porno movie. I’m sorry, I know he lost his eye in war, or whatever,” said Davidson during his bit on SNL.
Crenshaw responded with class.
Good rule in life: I try hard not to offend; I try harder not to be offended. That being said, I hope @nbcsnl recognizes that vets don’t deserve to see their wounds used as punchlines for bad jokes.

The joke didn’t go over well with almost anyone. As TownHall highlights, a CNN panel called the bit “disgusting” and “despicable,” and when even CNN thinks you’ve gone too far with bashing a Republican, you’ve definitely gone too far.
But even one of Davidson’s fellow co-stars thinks he crossed a line and failed miserably. Kenan Thompson, speaking to Today, thinks Davidson’s joke wasn’t something he could defend.
When asked if Davidson crossed the line, Thompson responded: “It seems it. Yeah, it definitely seems it”
Thompson told the Today hosts that his father was a Vietnam veteran and that he would “never personally go there,” but that comedians sometimes fail miserably when trying to come up with funny things.
“It’s tough when you’re fishing for jokes,” said Thompson. “That’s how stand-ups feel. Like there’s no real filters in the world when they’re trying to go for a great joke, or whatever.”
Thompson said that comedians “try to respect that.”
“But when you miss the mark, you’re offending people. So you’ve got to be a little more aware, in my opinion,” he added. “He definitely missed the mark.”
